Life can throw curveballs: One minute, Jennifer was running a successful childminding business; the next, the global pandemic had shut it down, changing everything for her and her partner, Simon. Coincidentally, Simon—who was already a long-time transportation professional— had seen an advert for the Amazon Freight Partner program and realised it was an unmissable opportunity.

“One random morning I saw an advert for the Amazon Freight Partner program and I thought it would be a great opportunity if Jen and I were to join. The rest, I say, is history,” explains Simon.

With no previous plans to own a business together, the couple decided to take the leap and enter the Amazon Freight Partner program—starting an experience which would completely change their lives.

Gearr-ing up for success

Although Simon had already been in the transportation industry for over a decade, when they entered the industry with their company, Gearr, they had no clear idea what to expect.

“We started from scratch with Gearr.” says Jennifer.

With determination, a strong partnership, and thirst for learning, Simon and Jennifer grew their small startup into a thriving transportation operation. Three years on, with strong support from the Amazon Freight Partner program, they now operate 15 trucks, running seven days a week, employing 25 drivers—as well as Simon also driving.

The beating heart of the business

On top of growing their knowledge of the ins and outs of the industry, Jennifer and Simon had to figure out how to work together and build a team that trusts and enjoys working with them. “The first year was intense, but I feel like we’ve found our rhythm and what really works for us,” says Simon.

They discovered that the key is playing to their own strengths. Jennifer explains, “I’m the ‘people’ person and Simon deals with the trucks.” Once they got into the groove of working together, they quickly realised that their team of drivers is the true heart and soul of the business. Simon explains that being a people person has allowed Jennifer to build great relationships with each driver, describing them as being like extended family to the couple.

“Our drivers are the lifeblood of Gearr. We absolutely couldn’t do this job without them. The most satisfaction I get from this is knowing that our drivers and families are taken care of,” says Jennifer. “Amazon Freight Partner not only changed our lives, but our drivers’ lives too.”

At Amazon, we aim to support the dreams and aspirations of transportation newcomers like Jennifer and Simon, helping them grow and succeed in the industry.
