For the past years, we’ve welcomed our employees and their kids to Amazon's Luxembourg office for a Christmassy photoshoot. We invited them to dress up in their nicest Christmas outfits and shake hands with St Nicholas. The kids were thrilled to meet St Nicholas in person, taste some chocolate and get a chance to discover the offices of their parents, where 2,200 Amazonians are based at our European HQ.
Take a glimpse at the photo gallery below to see how they shared the Christmas spirit with their loved ones.
What is Saint Nicholas?
The legend of Saint Nicholas can be traced back many hundreds of years to a bishop born around 280 A.D. He was believed to have been a kind person, admired for his piety. It's said that he gave away all his wealth and traveled across the countryside to help those in need. Over the course of many years, Nicholas’s popularity spread and he became known as the protector of children and sailors.
Saint Nicholas is often believed to be the predecessor of Santa Claus. This day is marked on December 5/6 in Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, among other countries. His feast day is celebrated on the anniversary of his death.
The name Santa Claus evolved from his Dutch nickname, Sinter Klaas, a shortened form of Sint Nikolaas, Dutch for Saint Nicholas.
