A Journey to Amazon Bar Raiser
Ever heard of Amazon's Leadership Principles? Well, neither had I until they became as much a part of my daily life as my morning coffee. These principles aren't just corporate jargon - they're Amazon's secret sauce, and for good reason.

After conducting over 200 interviews (yes, I counted), I decided to take on the challenge of becoming a Bar Raiser in July 2022. A Bar Raiser is an experienced Amazon interviewer outside the hiring team who ensures hiring standards are maintained and has veto power in hiring decisions. The start was surprisingly smooth - I completed the training and shadowed my first debrief.. This is a meeting where all interviewers discuss their feedback and collectively decide whether to hire the candidate based on Amazon's Leadership Principles and role requirements.
The turning point for me came through the invaluable support of my manager and Bar Raiser mentor - my unofficial superheroes in this story. They didn't just offer guidance; they helped analyse my performance and rebuild my confidence step by step. Their willingness to review my debrief structure beforehand made all the difference. Soon enough, I was successfully leading debriefs across diverse roles - from engineers to AI developers and fulfilment centre (FC) managers.
Finally, in March 2024, almost two years and countless cups of coffee later, I achieved my goal. Was the journey longer than expected? Absolutely. Was it worth it? Without a doubt. The experience taught me something invaluable: at Amazon, you're never alone. There's always a strong leader ready to help, guide, and occasionally share a laugh about those less-than-perfect moments.
Pro tip for aspiring Bar Raisers: pack your patience and don't forget your sense of humor - you'll need both! The challenges you face today become the stories you'll proudly tell tomorrow.

Bridging distances: How Amazon’s Leadership Principles foster inclusion and success in remote working
Fostering strong team dynamics and proper communication are key to overcoming challenges. By emphasising regular calls and encouraging open dialogue, our team maintained a robust sense of community, enabling members to voice their challenges and share insights. This approach transformed our processes into collaborative and inclusive actions.

When teams are separated across different time zones, numerous challenges can arise, such as the lack of resilience, reduced collaboration, miscommunication, and others. Despite these hurdles, we remained steadfast in our commitment to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance, with an overarching goal to create a seamless payroll experience for our employees.
In my experience, Embark the internal onboarding application and Amazon Leadership Principles demonstrated their practical value and helped me to feel supported and included. I had to engage with people from different organisations to understand the workflow and the partnerships we had with various stakeholders, which forced me to use my time wisely and understand the business from different perspectives. I had time to focus on our end customer, which reminded me that my work, regardless of my location, directly impacts customer satisfaction. I was empowered by our leadership with meaningful projects that I could own end-to-end, which gave me a sense of purpose and belonging.
Other practices that enhanced my sense of inclusion included setting up touchpoints to discuss our customer feedback and insights, recognising my efforts publicly, and setting clear expectations aligned with my team's goals. In conclusion, the consistent application and reinforcement of Amazon Leadership Principles by both leaders and teammates created an inclusive environment where I felt valued, connected, and an integral addition to the team's success.
This experience demonstrates that with the right approach and guiding principles, geographical distances can be bridged to create a unified, high-performing team. It underscores the practical value of leadership principles in fostering employee engagement, satisfaction, and performance in remote work scenarios.

A multifaceted journey
My Amazon journey began in 2021 as a Payroll Analyst supporting EMEA, specifically focusing on Saudi Arabia. Despite my prior experience in HR, payroll, and data analysis, the scale and complexity of Amazon's operations, with its intricate processes, diverse tools, and global teams, presented a steep learning curve.

Initially, I focused on core responsibilities like attendance data processing, salary calculations, and payment releases. However, I quickly discovered a broader scope – one that emphasised employee trust, continuous improvement, automation, and strategic initiatives. I thrived in this dynamic environment, collaborating with global teams, embracing the multicultural experience, and actively seeking innovative solutions.
Amazon's customer obsession resonated deeply with my values, driving me to prioritise employee satisfaction beyond timely salary payments.
Seeking new challenges, I joined the Nordics team, contributing to significant projects like time and attendance implementation and vendor transitions. This required quickly mastering Swedish legislation, a deep understanding of business requirements and expectations, effective collaboration with external providers, and innovative solutions for processing unique pay codes. It also involved instructing tech teams and rigorously testing the outcomes. This experience expanded my skillset and deepened my understanding of international payroll operations.
After two years as an Analyst, I embraced a stretch assignment – transitioning to a people manager role. Though initially hesitant, I was encouraged by the guidance and support of my senior management and team. Today, I lead a team of 14 Amazonians, fostering a culture of continuous learning, adaptability, and embracing change.
Payroll at Amazon is an exciting and rewarding domain, offering meaningful opportunities to contribute to the success of the company and its employees.

Crossing borders: A journey from Prague to Munich
When I joined Amazon in 2017 as a Contact Centre Associate in Prague, I never imagined the diverse and exciting career path ahead. Starting in customer service supporting our employees in Germany, I gained valuable insights into human resources (HR) operations and time management while working with an international team.

My progression to HR Administrator marked my first step towards payroll operations. In this role, I was responsible for payroll preparation, which involved calculating various inputs for the payroll system and ensuring accurate employee data entries in the HR system - fundamental skills that would prove essential for my future career in payroll.
In 2019, Amazon supported my relocation to Berlin, where I joined Audible as a Finance Coordinator. This role broadened my horizons significantly, exposing me to financial planning and analysis. It served as a crucial bridge between my HR background and future payroll career, allowing me to develop new skills in a different business context. With Amazon's continued support, I relocated to Munich in 2021 to join the DACH Payroll team. Starting as a Payroll Analyst, I leveraged both my HR knowledge from Prague and financial expertise from Berlin. This unique combination allowed me to approach payroll operations with a well-rounded perspective.
Each previous role contributed specific skills: customer service orientation from the contact centre, data management expertise from HR, and financial acumen from Audible.
Today, as a Senior Payroll Analyst for the DACH region, I ensure accurate and efficient payroll operations across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Working in three different Amazon locations has given me invaluable international experience and cultural awareness, essential for managing payroll in a multinational environment.
My story demonstrates that at Amazon, career paths are what you make of them. The company's support for both vertical and horizontal growth, coupled with comprehensive relocation assistance, allows you to build a unique career while gathering the skills you need. With determination and willingness to embrace new challenges, the possibilities for growth and development at Amazon are truly endless.
