Amazon tripled its Spanish workforce in 2018, from 1,600 permanent employees at the end of 2017 to over 4,800 now.
All employees receive competitive pay and a comprehensive benefits package, including private medical insurance, discounts on Amazon.es and innovative career development programs.
In addition to creating jobs, Amazon has invested over €1.1 billion in Spain since 2011.
Amazon’s direct job creation and investment also supports local Spanish producers and entrepreneurs – from businesses that supply Amazon facilities to those who sell on Amazon, including their products in Amazon’s Food and Wines from Spain store and using services like Fulfillment by Amazon to grow their businesses and export their products around the world.
Madrid – April 10, 2019 – Amazon today announced that it created over 3,200 permanent jobs in Spain in 2018 – tripling its permanent local workforce in only one year. Thanks to strong demand from customers and small businesses using Amazon’s services, the company doubled the plan it announced last July to create 1,600 new jobs in 2018. Amazon now has over 4,800 permanent employees across Spain.
These include jobs for people from all backgrounds, education and skill levels – from engineers and software developers to entry-level positions. They’re located in many areas across the country, from the corporate office in Madrid with more than 1,000 employees, to Barcelona, where Amazon opened a Seller Support Hub and Tech Hub last year, to Amazon’s fulfilment network across Spain. All of these jobs include competitive pay and full benefits. Amazon has invested over 1.1 billion Euros in its Spanish operations since 2011.
Mariangela Marseglia, Country Manager Amazon.es and Amazon.it, said: “We’re thrilled to have welcomed more than 3,200 new Amazonians to our teams across Spain last year as we continue to invest in supporting customers and small businesses.” Marseglia also added: “And we’re proud to offer all these employees great pay and full benefits, which helps them support their families and communities. It’s still day one for Amazon in Spain – we’ll keep working hard to provide the best possible products and services for our customers and help local SMEs and entrepreneurs continue to succeed both within Spain and around the world.”
Amazon allows independent sellers to sell in its store and has invested billions of dollars in tools and infrastructure around the world to help those sellers succeed. Thanks to services like Selling on Amazon, Fulfillment by Amazon, and global selling, third-party sellers now make up over half of the units sold on Amazon, and sales from these businesses are growing faster than Amazon’s own sales. More than 10,000 jobs in Spain are supported by third party businesses selling on Amazon.
Independent sellers on Amazon offer a variety of new, used, refurbished, and collectible merchandise.
Spanish startups can launch, market, and distribute their products to millions of customers on Amazon.es and across the globe through Amazon Launchpad, a store opened on Amazon.es last September. Artisans can sell their unique, handcrafted goods to hundreds of millions of customers worldwide, using the Handmade store. And the Foods and Wines from Spain store, developed with ICEX Spain Trade & Investment, opens the doors of local gastronomy and food producers to customers of around the world.
Amazon’s Fulfillment Infrastructure Investments Across Spain
Many of the roles have been created in the fulfillment centers of San Fernando de Henares and Getafe (Madrid), as well as in El Prat de Llobregat and Martorelles (Barcelona) and the 8 delivery stations located across the country.
Fred Pattje, Amazon Operations Director for Italy, Spain and France, said: “The creation of permanent jobs in our fulfillment centers and across the network demonstrate Amazon's commitment to Spain. This will enable us to further improve our support to Amazon customers and to the growing number of independent small and medium-sized businesses selling on Amazon and using Fulfillment by Amazon. Our state-of-the art facilities offer local employees a great working environment, opportunities for professional development, competitive salaries and rewarding benefits.”
Competitive Pay, Comprehensive Benefits, and Training Programs for Spanish Employees
All permanent Amazon employees, whether working in Spanish fulfillment centers or corporate offices, receive competitive pay and a comprehensive benefits package, including private medical insurance from day one, life insurance, an employee discount on Amazon.es, and a company pension plan. Amazon offers fulfillment center associates a minimum yearly salary of over € 19.300, in both Madrid and Barcelona, the two regions where the majority of its associates are based. They also benefit from an innovative program called Career Choice which provides funding for adult education, offering to pre-pay 95% of tuition and associated fees for nationally recognized, in-demand courses, up to 8,000 euro over four years.
Amazon was recognized as “the most attractive company to work in Spain” by ‘Randstad Employer Brand Research 2018’, with more than 7,000 surveys in Spain. Amazon was also selected by Universum in 2018 as one of the “Most Attractive Employers in Spain”. Over 22,000 students in 63 different Spanish universities ranked Amazon 5th among all Spanish companies for business students, improving its position in this ranking 5 places from previous year’s edition.
