Amazon’s “Italy Plan” accelerates in 2021 with the opening of two new sites: a €230 million investment generating further 1,100 new permanent opportunities in three years.

Milan, January 21, 2021 – Amazon today announced it has created over 2,600 permanent jobs in Italy in 2020. Exceeding the plan announced last July, Amazon now has more than 9,500 permanent employees across Italy. Amazon has become a major job creator in Italy offering stable and well rewarded opportunities across the Country sustaining the Italian economy recovery and digitization.

These include jobs for people from all backgrounds, career aspirations, education and skill levels – from engineers, software developers and cloud experts, to workers reentering the job market and entry-level positions. They are located in more than 40 sites across the Country, from our Italian Corporate Office in Milan; Development Centers in Turin and Asti; our Data Centers in Lombardy; our Customer Service Center in Cagliari; our Fulfillment Centers, Delivery Stations from Torrazza Piemonte to Catania.

Along with the new permanent roles that the company is creating, Amazon continues to empower entrepreneurs and individuals who want to start their business, digitize an existing one or earn extra money to supplement their incomes through different programs such as Selling on Amazon and FBA, and through the new training program Accelera con Amazon that, free of charge, will boost the growth and the digitization of more than 10,000 small businesses across Italy.

Empowering smaller companies is at the core of anything Amazon does, with more than half of all annual sales on Amazon coming from SMEs. Amazon continued to support small- and medium-sized businesses throughout the pandemic, investing more than €16 billion to help independent businesses grow their sales on Amazon in 2020. Nearly 600 small Italian businesses surpassed €850k in sales on Amazon, while the total export sales of our Italian selling partners exceeded €500m. Moreover, to sustain their digital growth, they created 25,000 new jobs.

Amazon’s Infrastructure Investments Across Italy

Amazon continues to invest in its logistics infrastructure across the country. During 2021 we will open 2 new sites, a fulfillment center in Novara and a sortation center in Spilamberto (MO), that will generate 1,100 permanent jobs in three years on top of the company’s 9.500 existing roles in the Country. These new facilities are in addition to the existing sites which include the 2 fulfillment centers, Castelguglielmo/San Bellino (RO) and Colleferro (RM), and the 10 delivery stations, Bitonto (BA), San Giovanni Teatino (CH), Genova, Castegnato (BS), Mezzate (MI), Tavagnacco (UD), Parma, Pisa, Catania, Cagliari, launched in 2020.

Over the last year, across Italy and the world, Amazon has adapted its processes and facilities to ensure employees can work safely while serving customers. The company has introduced over 150 processes, including the provision of masks, hand sanitizer, thermal cameras, thermometers, sanitizing wipes, gloves and additional handwashing stations, as well as ensuring the rapid implementation of two meters of social distancing measures at our sites. All over the world Amazon has already invested more than $800 million in COVID-19 safety measures. In Italy alone Amazon purchased 260 million units of hand disinfectant, 11.4 million pairs of gloves, 8 million units of facemasks, face shields and other mouth-nose-covers, and 40.6 million units of disinfectant wipes.

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

To further establish Italy at the forefront of the digital economy, Amazon Web Services (AWS) opened on April 28, 2020 an infrastructure region comprised of several data centers located in Italy. The AWS Europe (Milan) Region enables even more developers, startups, and enterprises as well as government, education, and non-profit organizations to serve end-users with even lower latency and to run workloads and store data from data centers located in Italy, with the assurance that they retain complete ownership of their data and it will not move unless they choose to move it.
