Luxembourg, September 24, 2020 – As of today, the latest Amazon Robotics fulfillment center to open – in Seville’s greater metropolitan area at Dos Hermanas municipality - is officially up and running. The site is the sixth fulfillment center to be opened by Amazon in Spain, joining the ones in San Fernando de Henares (Madrid), El Prat (Barcelona), Martorelles (Barcelona), Castellbisbal (Barcelona) and Illescas (Toledo). With this new site, the company expects to create over 1,000 full-time jobs within three years of opening. The fulfillment center kicked off operations, shipping its first package of color markers just in time for the Back to School season.

This latest addition to the Amazon Operations network supports the ever-increasing customer demand and provides the necessary support for small and medium-sized businesses looking to sell over Amazon using “Fulfilled by Amazon”, a program that provides sales and shipping services to third parties sellers.

“We are very excited to open the doors and start serving Amazon customers in Spain and Europe from this new state-of-the-art robotics site. This is the first Amazon Fulfillment Center in the Andalusian region, complementing our Delivery Stations in Seville and Malaga. We are proud to contribute to local employment, and intend to raise our total number of permanent employees at the center to more than one thousand over the next three years,” stated Stefano Perego, VP Europe Customer Fulfilment. “At Amazon, we place tremendous value and focus on the well-being, health and safety of our employees, partners and customers. Thus, since the early days of the sanitary emergency, we have been committed to ensuring a clean and safe workplace and we’ve implemented over 150 significant process changes—from enhanced cleaning and social distancing measures to new efforts like disinfectant spraying. Our goal is to put our employees’ health and safety first while they serve our customers. Indeed, in Spain alone we have ordered 6 million pairs of gloves, more than 3 million units of facemasks, 16 million units of disinfectant wipes and half a million units of hand disinfectant.”

More details on the measures implemented can be found here.

The fulfillment center located in the municipality of Dos Hermanas, 14km away from Seville, will be equipped with advanced Amazon Robotics technology focused on preserving the health and wellbeing of the employees. This is the latest in a long line of innovative technology Amazon introduced to assist warehouse associates that help to reduce walking time by moving the shelves to them.

The center also integrates energy savings technologies, delivering a low overall CO2 footprint. Solar panels have been installed on the roof, and low energy consumption systems – such as LEDs – provide excellent lighting. Heat and energy recovery systems have been integrated into the ventilation systems, while windows, roof and façades are high thermal efficient in order to guarantee insulation. Indeed, the building has a BREEAM “very good” certification.

“We welcome the official opening of the Amazon fulfillment center in Dos Hermanas. It is located within the new industrial development zone in Megapark, which, together with the already consolidated Polígono la Isla constitute the largest industrial extension in Andalusia with more than 600 hectares, means a commitment to a territory that has direct access to the SE-40. This area has great connections to the airport, the port and railway area, with the rest of all road directions and, directly, with the National Highway IV”, says Francisco Toscano Sánchez, Mayor of Dos Hermanas. "In the times of technological and logistical development that we are living, the arrival of Amazon to our municipality and the chosen space mean one more example for the confirmation of the solidarity development project of Dos Hermanas for the present and future of the great Metropolitan Seville that we have always worked for”.

This new fulfillment center joins the family of Amazon facilities in Andalusia, already in place with one delivery station in Seville and another one in Malaga. In addition to a competitive salary, Amazon employees receive many other benefits, such as discounts on products sold on Amazon.es and private health insurance. Amazon also offers innovative benefits such as Career Choice, which pay up to 95% of tuition and books for education courses for four years.

Investing in Spain

Amazon’s Operations network in Spain started with the San Fernando de Henares (Madrid) fulfilment center, which started operations in 2012 – a year after the launch of Amazon.es. Over the last seven years, the company has opened so far six fulfilment centers located in El Prat (Barcelona), Martorelles (Barcelona), Castellbisbal (Barcelona), Illescas (Toledo) and now Dos Hermanas (Seville) and Alcalá de Henares (Madrid). In addition, Amazon also has two urban fulfillment centers in Madrid and Barcelona, which provide fast deliveries to its Prime customers in these cities through the Prime Now service. In addition, the company has two sortation centers, located in Getafe (Madrid) and Barberá del Vallés (Barcelona), and 14 delivery stations located throughout the country to strengthen their delivery services for the benefit of customers and sellers.

Amazon has invested 2,900 million euros in Spain since 2011 in infrastructure, transport and shipping, salaries and benefits for its employees, among others. Investments also include two software development centers (Tech Hubs) in Madrid and Barcelona that employ nearly 400 engineers, software developers, data scientists, and experts in machine learning and cloud storage. In 2020, 2,000 new jobs will be created in Spain, increasing its permanent staff to 9,000 employees by the end of the year.
