Amazon will open a new fulfillment center in Alcalá de Henares

Amazon is further expanding its fulfillment center network in Spain to respond to growing customer demand, increase product selection and better support small independent sellers.

Amazon will create over 500 permanent jobs within three years with competitive pay and comprehensive benefits from day one.

Located in the industrial park “El Encín”, within El Corredor de Henares, this new fulfillment center – the second in the Madrid region – will be operational in early fall this year.

Luxembourg, June 11, 2020 – Amazon today announced it will open its second fulfillment center in the Madrid region in early fall this year. With this new site, located in Alcalá de Henares, Amazon will create over 500 permanent jobs in three years on top of the company’s 7,000 existing roles in Spain.

Amazon is further expanding the size of its Spanish fulfillment center network to meet increasing customer demand, expand its product selection, and support a growing number of independent small businesses (SMEs) using Fulfillment by Amazon warehousing and delivery. “Since we began our commercial activities in 2011, we have invested more than 2.9 billion euros in Spain, including infrastructure and facilities, shipping and transportation, and salaries and benefits for employees. Furthermore, we’re also committed to investing in renewable energy as a critical step toward addressing our carbon footprint globally”, added Stefano Perego.

The new fulfillment center will be located in the industrial park of “El Encín” within El Corredor de Henares, just 30km away from the capital and 27km from the airport. This facility will be the second fulfillment center announced by the company in 2020, following the new state-of-the-art robotic FC in Dos Hermanas, Seville. This new fulfillment center will be used by Amazon to stock and manage non-sortable products, supporting Amazon operations in Spain and Europe.

The new facility is certified as BREEAM good, providing low energy consumption and low carbon dioxide emissions and including technologies as LEDs lighting and heat and energy recovery systems integrated into the air conditioning installation. A building management system will be installed to control performance efficiency and secure energy saving during operation, providing our associates the best and healthiest environment possible.

The Mayor of Alcalá, Javier Rodríguez Palacios, said, "The arrival of this company in Alcalá de Henares is very positive news for our city, even more so at a time like today." Rodríguez Palacios added that the Amazon logistics center will be a "boost for direct and indirect jobs and for the promotion of employment and economic and industrial revival, which is and will be a priority for this government team. Amazon warehouse associates hiring will start during summer. They will be hired under the Collective Bargaining Agreement of Logistics Operators of the Province of Madrid, with an entry base salary of over 19.300 gross euros and a complete benefits package. Which includes private medical insurance, life insurance, employee discount and a company pension plan, the whole compensation package is in the highest range of the logistics industry. They also benefit from an innovative program called Career Choice that provides employees funding for adult education, offering to pre-pay 95% of tuition and associated fees for nationally recognized courses, up to 8.000 euros over four years.

Amazon’s Operations network in Spain started with the San Fernando de Henares (Madrid) fulfilment center, which started operations in 2012 – a year after the launch of Amazon.es. Over the last seven years, the company has opened fulfilment centers located in El Prat (Barcelona), Martorelles (Barcelona), Castellbisbal (Barcelona), Illescas (Toledo), Dos Hermanas (Seville) and now Alcalá de Henares (Madrid). In addition, Amazon also has two urban fulfillment centers in Madrid and Barcelona, ​​which provide ultra-fast deliveries to its Prime customers in these cities through the Prime Now service. In addition, the company has two sortation centers, located in Getafe (Madrid) and Barberá del Vallés (Barcelona), and twelve delivery stations located throughout the country to strengthen their delivery services for the benefit of customers and sellers.

Amazon has invested in Spain 2.9 billion euros between 2011 and 2018 on infrastructure, shipments, salaries and benefits for employees, among others. Investments include two Software Development Centers (Tech Hubs) in Madrid and Barcelona that, by the end of 2019, employed more than 300 engineers, software developers, data scientists, machine learning experts and cloud experts. The center in Madrid focuses on Amazon Business, Kindle & Books and other services for its five Amazon European websites and plans to open 200 new technology jobs by the end of 2020. The Tech Hub in Barcelona specializes in Machine Learning (search technology) and AI. In 2019 alone, Amazon created more than 2,000 jobs, increasing its workforce to 7,000 permanent employees in Spain.
