Luxembourg – July 4th, 2019 – Amazon today announced plans to open its seventh facility in Barcelona this fall, which will have more than 230 permanent associates over the next three years. Roles at the sort centre come with competitive pay, compelling benefits, and the opportunity to engage with Amazon Robotics’ latest innovations – such as the Pegasus Drives – in a highly advanced workplace. This will be the first facility equipped with this technology in the EU and will assist Amazon’s associates in managing customer orders. The sort centre, located in a building of over 28,000m2 (approximately four football fields), will sort parcels received from Amazon’s fulfilment centres before they are transported to delivery stations where they are collected by drivers for delivery to customers. Amazon is continuing to increase the size of its operations in Spain to meet increasing customer demand, expand selection and enable Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) selling on Amazon Marketplace to scale their businesses. “We are really excited to see our sites get more sophisticated as the Amazon Robotics technology evolves. Thanks to this evolution we are helping our associates learn and train for new and fascinating roles, such as an amnesty responder or flow control specialist, and support them in re-allocating their abilities,” said Dennis Oates, EU Director Sort Centres Program and Innovation. “We work relentlessly for both our customers and our associates to make sure we offer them the best experience possible through continuous innovation and investment, while creating permanent jobs at the same time. We would like to thank the Barberá del Vallés authorities for their professional and timely support.”

The facility leverages the core technology of the Amazon Robotics storage floors, where robotic drives move on a grid. However, instead of moving tall storage pods, these robotic drive units sort and route individual packages. The Pegasus Drives receive individual packages onto their tabletop conveyor, travel across the elevated mezzanine, and release the package into the desired chute associated with the destination sort point. Pegasus Drive is Amazon's latest robot designed to create greater efficiency in its sortation process so customers can receive their orders even faster. Watch them in action here.
