MADRID, 10 June 2021 – Amazon announced today that in 2021 it will create 3,000 new permanent jobs in Spain, bringing its workforce to a total of 15,000 employees. These roles are for workers from all backgrounds and education levels, including entry-level positions in logistics, software developers and engineers, business and account managers, data scientists and machine-learning professionals, as well as cloud experts and solution architects working at Amazon Web Services.

“We are incredibly proud to continue to create jobs in Spain as we extend our network and operations in the country to respond to the confidence placed in us by millions of customers and thousands of Spanish SMEs that sell their products in our stores. Ten years after the launch of amazon.es, our commitment to Spain is stronger than ever, we are delighted to be able to create attractive professional opportunities and contribute to the economic recovery,” highlighted Mariangela Marseglia, VP and Country Manager for Amazon in Italy and Spain.

By end of 2020, Amazon had contributed to providing jobs to well over 100,000 people in Spain including favoring indirect positions across its supply chain, including, for example, building, property and professional services, but also people working for the 9,000 Spanish SMEs that currently sell on Amazon´s stores.

‘At Amazon we have the opportunity to shape the way that thousands of individuals and businesses sell and buy products online, and that is a phenomenal source of inspiration to keep innovating every day on behalf of them,” explains Juan Barbero, senior program manager. “In the current context of the pandemic, I had the opportunity to be part of Despega, a program designed to support Spanish SMBs and entrepreneurs to develop skills and competencies to be successful selling online and expand their businesses across Europe and the world. Working on this initiative made me even more aware of the importance of digitalization as a key driver for the economic recovery. Even after more than 5 years in the company working on several teams, for us it is always like Day 1”.

Since Amazon began its business activities in 2011 in Spain, the company has invested over €6.8 billion in infrastructure and facilities, shipping and transportation, salaries and benefits for employees, as well as other logistics expenses. In 2020 alone, the company invested more than €2.5 billion in improving its processes, wages and providing a reliable and timely service guarantee to customers.

“You have many doors open to advance in your career. Amazon helps you find your path, work on your skills and especially improve your weak points. You have a voice and the opportunity to make improvements and develop projects on your own. It allows you to combine your professional and personal life, although many of us like and are so passionate about working at Amazon that we end the day and continue to think about future projects, future improvements, changes that can cause an impact, etc.” explained Berta Puig Domenjo, trainer at one of Amazon´s fulfillment centers in Barcelona.

Amazon has also announced it will open five delivery stations in Alicante, Tarragona, Barcelona, Montcada and Mollet del Vallès, so it can increase its product offering and improve the support it provides to its commercial partners, while creating new quality jobs in the regions in which it operates.

It is not only the large urban areas that benefit from Amazon’s economic impact, with smaller cities and towns in different Spanish regions also seeing how Amazon is helping them lower their unemployment rates.

“It is not only the large urban areas that benefit from Amazon’s economic impact, with smaller cities and towns in different Spanish regions also seeing how Amazon is helping them lower their unemployment rates. We are also welcoming a large number of young people who might be having a difficult time landing a job in the current economic climate. Amazon´s spillover effects, on top of our direct investments, have contributed to the country´s GDP with €8,3 billion over the last 10 years”, commented Marseglia.

Amazon is rapidly growing its Tech Hubs in Madrid and Barcelona, where almost 600 software developers, computer engineers and data scientists are working on applications for Amazon Business, Kindle and books, retail and artificial intelligence. To support growing customer demand for Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud services across the Iberian Peninsula, AWS will open the AWS Europe (Spain) Region by mid-2022, ahead of schedule.

The new AWS Europe (Spain) Region, which represents an additional €2.5 billion investment by AWS in the country over the next 10 years, will enable customers to run workloads and securely store data in Spain while serving end-users with even lower latency. This new investment will also increase the GDP of Spain by approximately €1.8 billion and create 1,300 new jobs over the next 10 years
