In Spain around 1,300 children are diagnosed with cancer every year. Although about 80% of them are eventually cured, the disease is a challenging test for them. Mónica Esteban and Valle Sallés, founder and director of Juegaterapia, strive to help these young patients overcome cancer.

The only time the kids forget about the treatment and are in charge of their lives is when they are playing. They turn into princesses, detectives or superheroes.

“The only time the kids forget about the treatment and are in charge of their lives is when they are playing. They turn into princesses, detectives or superheroes”, explains Mónica. “Moreover, they produce endorphins that act as natural painkillers”. Mónica realised this five years ago, when she gave a games console as a present to a friend’s son, who was undergoing chemotherapy. This was how the Juegaterapia Foundation was created, and delivered more than 2,000 consoles and 10,000 video games to more than 85 hospitals. Now, it also invites you to play with a bald doll for a good cause.

Bald, endearing and supportive

“A mother called and told me, ‘my little one’s hair is starting to fall out again, and she’s very depressed… I need some cool headscarves.’ And I thought, why not create lovely dolls that help people understand the effects of chemotherapy and make them seem more normal and human?” Juegaterapia asked several celebrities and a girl with cancer to design a headscarf and create the special dolls, with the help of a company in Onil, in Spain’s Alicante region. Now these dolls, fondly referred to as Baby Pelones, can be bought on Amazon.es.

“We’re very proud of the fact that it’s the first 100% charitable product to go on sale on Amazon.es, and all the profits will allow us to keep working for these children,” Valle explains. Thanks to Baby Pelones, several projects will be financed, such as the construction of gardens on hospital roofs: a place where children can continue being children.
