Today, the AWS Europe (Ireland) Region has three Availability Zones, and plays a central role in bringing cloud computing and AI to organisations across Ireland, Europe, and around the globe. Research conducted by Indecon International Economic Consultants (Indecon) found that AWS has increased economic output in Ireland by over €11.4 billion since 2012, contributing nearly €2.4 billion in additional economic output in 2022 alone. According to Indecon, AWS supports an average of more than 10,000 jobs per year in local communities across the country. AWS employs over 4,200 employees directly in Ireland, with more than 3,000 working for AWS suppliers and sub-contractors, and a further 2,900 roles in the workforce indirectly attributable to AWS investment. A typical AWS data centre campus in Ireland supports over 250 full-time jobs every year.
The same research found that AWS investment has enabled over 500 domestic suppliers to expand and grow in Ireland and abroad. This includes major construction contractors, mechanical and electrical suppliers, professional services, and a wide range of logistics services provided by local businesses including Hanley Energy, Collen Construction, and Danann Air. By working with AWS, many of these companies have developed specialist, world-leading expertise, meaning Irish firms are now market leaders in providing materials and services to data centres globally. In 2023, contracts won by suppliers and subcontractors to AWS for the development of cloud infrastructure overseas increased to an estimated €240 million, a figure forecasted to rise further over the remainder of the decade.
In November 2025, AWS announced Fastnet, a new state-of-the-art transatlantic subsea fibre optic cable system connecting Maryland, US, and County Cork, Ireland. When operational, Fastnet will add vital diversity for customers by building a new data pathway with unique landing points, keeping services running even if other undersea cables encounter issues.
Today, organisations of all sizes and across all industries in Ireland are using AWS – from the fastest growing startups to small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), the largest enterprises, public sector organisations, educational institutions, and government agencies. Customers like Axial 3D, Bank of Ireland, Beacon Care Fertility, Health Service Executive (HSE), Herdwatch, Ryanair, Sonrai Analytics, Stripe, Vision Ireland, Wellola and XOCEAN are using AWS to innovate faster, boost productivity, and compete on a global stage.
Supporting Ireland's communities
As a long-term investor in Ireland, AWS is committed to creating lasting positive impact where we operate. We work with communities to support hyperlocal social impact, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) education, local skills development, and sustainability.
The InCommunities programme coordinates community engagement activity in regions where Amazon data centres are located, ensuring local residents, schools, and community organisations experience the tangible benefits of AWS's presence in their area. Programmes are designed in direct consultation with local communities to ensure investment is targeted where it has the greatest impact. Our work in Ireland spans four pillars: STEM education, local skills development, sustainability and hyperlocal social impact.
STEM Education
Our flagship education initiative, the Amazon Think Big Space in Tallaght, launched in 2022 as the first of its kind in Europe. Since then, over 31,000 students and 900 teachers, educators, and youth group leaders have engaged with the programme, with 70% of participating schools in the Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools (DEIS) programme. In September 2024, the Amazon Mobile Think Big Space launched, bringing new technologies directly to primary school students across the country. Our Community Engagement team runs a calendar of events designed to bring people together and inspire the next generation, through Think Big Signature Events, specifically aimed at encouraging young people to explore STEM subjects and consider careers in technology.
In 2025, AWS donated a free digital technology kit to every primary school in Ireland through the Enabling Digital Technology in Primary Schools (EDTips) programme, providing free teaching resources and equipment to help schools prepare for the introduction of the Primary Curriculum Framework.
Local Skills Development
Through partnerships with Irish colleges and universities, AWS is helping to build the next generation of tech talent. AWS collaborates with Technological University Dublin (TU Dublin) and the Drogheda Institute of Further Education (DIFE) on Data Centre Technician programmes and bursary initiatives annually that provide clear pathways into data centre careers with no prerequisites. Delivered over two semesters of evening instruction followed by a 14-week work placement at an Amazon data centre, almost all graduates secure full-time employment in the tech industry.
At the University of Limerick, a major philanthropic gift from AWS will fully fund the Global Fellowships programme in perpetuity.
Sustainability
Amazon collaborates with EnergyCloud to provide free tanks of hot water to hundreds of households in Ireland. We deliver regular community clean-ups of parks, beaches, trails, and green spaces near our data centres through employee-led site stewardship activities. We also create and revitalise green spaces with native planting to support local biodiversity and provide lasting community assets.
Hyperlocal Social Impact
InCommunities supports local groups, schools, and organisations to launch new projects or expand existing ones through dedicated community funds. Since 2021, we have delivered 26 Community Build projects - refurbishing and creating community spaces for long-term local benefit.
Through our Ambassador Programme, AWS employees are embedded in local communities to deepen engagement year-round, and each year our Global Month of Volunteering sees teams across Ireland take part in clean-ups, green space restoration, and community activities.
Commitment to sustainability
Sustainability is central to how AWS builds and operates in Ireland. From powering our infrastructure with carbon-free energy, to restoring biodiversity and minimising water use, we are working to leave a positive environmental legacy in the communities where we operate.
Through The Climate Pledge, Amazon has committed to reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 - a decade ahead of the Paris Agreement.
Carbon-free energy
Across the island of Ireland, Amazon has enabled six wind farms through corporate power purchase agreements. When completed, these will provide 373 MW of carbon-free energy, enough to power the equivalent of more than 298,000 homes. The sites are in Cork, Galway, Antrim, Londonderry, Donegal, and Offaly, with projects at various stages of development. Most recently, in April 2026, the 126 MW Derrinlough Wind Farm came online: a €150 million investment on former Bord na Móna peatlands, delivering clean energy equivalent to powering 90,000 Irish homes, entirely without public subsidy. It is Amazon’s largest Irish project to date and forms part of a commitment to invest in up to 800 MW of new renewables in Ireland in collaboration with Bord na Móna.
Water stewardship
In November 2022, AWS announced it will be water positive by 2030, returning more water to communities than it uses in its direct operations. As of 2024, AWS is 53% of the way towards this goal.
In Ireland, our data centres use direct evaporative cooling systems, meaning for more than 95% of the year, no water is used for cooling. The newest designs use as little as 1,000m3 annually per data centre, equivalent to the yearly water usage of just eight average Irish households.
Our community support extends to restoring Ireland's natural landscape. Amazon has donated €2.5 million from the Right Now Climate Fund to support The Nature Trust to restore 500 hectares of blanket bog in the west of Ireland. Amazon has also supported a new Peatland Standard to accelerate restoration and boost Ireland's climate resilience.
District heating
AWS is putting recycled waste heat from its data centre in Dublin to use. In Tallaght, AWS worked with South Dublin County Council to deliver the Tallaght District Heating Scheme (TDHS), the first of its kind in Ireland, providing low-carbon heat free of charge to 55,000 square metres of public sector, residential, and commercial customers.
Circular economy
In 2024, Amazon expanded its European reverse logistics programme through re:Cycle Reverse Logistics which operates facilities in Dublin that test and repair equipment from AWS data centres. The facilities extend the life of data centre hardware and other electronics so they can be reused. This circular economy initiative supports our path to reach net-zero carbon by ensuring fewer new components need to be produced, saving raw materials and energy. While the operation is predominantly focused on reuse, where waste is generated, zero waste goes to landfill; instead, it is sent for high-end recycling. The re:Cycle Reverse Logistics facilities in Dublin, together with AWS's manufacturing sites where servers are assembled, have created over 850 local jobs.
AWS Horizon Award
Each year, AWS recognises an Irish company that has leveraged its work in cloud infrastructure to export products or services internationally, or made an outstanding contribution to the reputation of Ireland's data centre industry. Now in its fourth year, the AWS Horizon Award celebrates homegrown Irish firms whose growth has been accelerated through collaboration with AWS - creating jobs in Ireland while developing world-leading expertise that competes on a global stage.
AWS has honoured companies across a range of sectors central to the cloud infrastructure ecosystem. Waterford-headquartered electrical engineering firm STS Group received the inaugural award for its international expansion in power and engineering solutions. In 2024, Limerick-based H&MV Engineering was recognised for its cutting-edge design and construction work across data centres, wind farms, solar projects, and battery storage - having created 700 new roles in Ireland while establishing a global footprint. Dublin-based ATC Logistics won in 2025, having transformed from a family business into a global leader in data centre operations management, including secure transport, installation, and decommissioning services. Most recently, in 2026, the award was presented to John Paul Construction, one of Ireland's most established construction firms, in recognition of over twelve years of partnership with AWS and its expansion across the UK and mainland Europe.
