Since our arrival in Italy, we have strengthened our presence in the country through significant investments, contributing directly and indirectly to economic growth, employment, and the development of the national productive fabric.
Investments benefiting the country
By the end of 2024, our total investments in Italy since 2010 have exceeded €25 billion, making a tangible contribution to the country's economic and infrastructural development. In 2024 alone, we invested over €4 billion. This includes both capital expenditures, such as the infrastructure we build, logistics centres, corporate offices, and cloud infrastructure; and operating expenses, such as the salaries we pay our employees in Italy.
Since 2010, according to Keystone estimates, Amazon's investments have generated a total contribution of over €19 billion to Italy's GDP. Every euro invested by Amazon has produced, on average, around 95 cents of added value for the national economy.
These resources have contributed to modernizing Italy's productive system, supporting local supply chain competitiveness, and accelerating the adoption of advanced technologies, aligning with national priorities for digitalization and innovation.
"Since our arrival in Italy in 2010, Amazon has invested over 25 billion euros in the local economy, including 4 billion euros in 2024 alone. These investments have contributed not only to the creation of infrastructure and jobs but also to the tangible development of the territories hosting our logistics hubs: the municipalities surrounding Amazon distribution centers have recorded significant growth in employment, increased business revenues, and greater resilience in the real estate market compared to the national average. A journey that has significantly contributed to the country's digital and physical transformation, stimulating its economic growth and strengthening its dynamism and competitiveness." - Giorgio Busnelli, VP & Country Manager Amazon Italy.
Foreign multinationals as engines for the Italian economy
Amazon's experience in Italy is part of a broader framework highlighting the crucial role of multinationals in national economic development. According to the Global Attractiveness Index 2025, developed by think tank The European House – Ambrosetti, multinationals represent an important enabling factor for the country's sustainable growth, thanks to investments in advanced technologies, skills development, and strengthening of production chain competitiveness.
Despite representing only 0.3% of total businesses in Italy, foreign multinationals —particularly those from the United States— generate significant impact: contributing €713 billion to national revenue (20.3%), supporting 9.9% of employment and 17.4% of GDP, and accounting for 22.8% of total Research & Development spending. Moreover, they are responsible for 22.5% of goods and services purchases made within the country. These figures confirm the role of multinationals like Amazon as value multipliers for the Italian economy, capable of generating positive effects throughout the entire value chain. Through targeted investments, creation of qualified employment, and technology transfer, multinationals help strengthen the country's productivity and support its long-term competitiveness.
Stable and qualified jobs: Amazon's workforce impact
Our impact on the Italian economy also translates into significant employment contribution. We currently employ over 19,000 people on permanent jobs in Italy, operating across more than 60 facilities throughout the country – including operations, corporate offices, data centres, and customer service offices. Positions range from logistics to technology, from customer service to operations management, offering career opportunities, continuous training, and competitive benefits.
This is complemented by indirect jobs: according to Keystone estimates, in 2024, Amazon’s investments in Italy are estimated to have supported more than 40 thousand indirect jobs and more than 10 thousand induced jobs in areas like construction, logistics, and other professional services.
Our employees' professional growth is among our priorities, which is why we invest substantially in their training and skills development through programs like Career Choice, a training path for Amazon employees to help them pursue their educational and professional goals following their career aspirations through concrete tools to promote employability and skills growth in key sectors for the digital economy. Through this program, we cover up to €8,000 over four years for nationally recognized training courses, providing access to new professional opportunities both inside and outside the company, including Cloud Support Specialist, Cyber Security Specialist, Network Security Specialist, and IT Support Specialist roles, in collaboration with Amazon Web Services. Since its launch in 2014, more than 4,000 Amazon employees in Italy have participated in the program, which has been renewed and enhanced this year to make education access even more simple and inclusive for all our employees. Among the most significant updates is the elimination of personal contribution: Amazon will now advance up to 100% of training expenses, eliminating the 5% previously charged to employees. Another innovation involves removing the four-year maximum spending cap, allowing participants to freely continue their educational journey over time. Additionally, we've increased the annual budget limit for each participant, further expanding access to quality courses and highly specialized paths.
Also thanks to these initiatives, in April 2025, Amazon was included in LinkedIn's Top Ten Companies Italy, a ranking that recognizes companies offering the best career prospects, stability, and professional development. The recognition reflects a dynamic and inclusive work environment where people's growth is central to business strategy, and daily innovation translates into personalized career paths, mentoring, feedback culture, and talent development.
Our operational excellence in technology and innovation
In Italy, Amazon also introduced a European center of excellence for implementing cutting-edge solutions in robotics and artificial intelligence. In Vercelli, in the heart of Piedmont region, we indeed have the Operations Innovation Lab, one of our three worldwide laboratories dedicated to implementing advanced technologies for logistics, the only one outside of the US.
This state-of-the-art center is responsible for implementing over 1,000 breakthrough innovations in Amazon's European fulfillment centers, with an investment exceeding €700 million.
Our total tax contribution
We contribute to fund public services and infrastructure throughout the country through the taxes collected by the government, which fall into two categories:
- Taxes borne: Taxes directly incurred and payable by Amazon, including Corporation Tax (IRES and IRAP), taxes paid for land acquisition or construction (Property Tax, Registration Tax), payroll taxes and social security paid by employers, import duties, and the DST (Digital Service Tax).
- Taxes collected: Taxes we collect and remit from our customers, employees, and other third parties because of our business activities in Italy. These taxes include VAT and the contributions paid by our employees.
It's important to include both these tax categories because focusing on just one aspect of taxation, such as corporate tax, doesn't provide a complete picture: According to recent research conducted by the OECD, Corporation Tax accounts for only around 5% of the total tax revenue from Italian taxpayers.
- In 2024, the total revenues of Amazon’s activities in Italy were over 11 billion euros.
- In 2024, Amazon's investments amounted to over €4 billion.
- In 2024, our total tax contribution in Italy (combining taxes borne and taxes collected) was more than €1.7 billion (+21% compared to €1.405 billion in 2023). This data breaks down into:
- Our total taxes borne were more than €420 million in Italy (+22% compared to €344 million in 2023). Employer taxes accounted for a significant portion of this amount. Other direct taxes included corporate income tax, taxes paid for land acquisition or construction, the DST (Digital Service Tax), and import duties.
- The taxes we collected and administrated for the government were more than €1.3 billion (+30% compared to €1 billion in 2023) due to our business activities in Italy, in addition to the Italian VAT on transactions involving overseas sellers that Amazon collects and pays on their behalf.
According to research by Luiss Business School, Amazon ranks among the top 50 Italian companies in terms of total tax contribution to the State. More broadly, the research highlights how the retail sector, both traditional and online, is characterized by some of the highest taxation levels in our country relative to the value added created. In 2023, taxation in the sector maintained significant levels, with tax burden in e-commerce averaging around 20%, slightly higher than traditional retail (19%). The 50 companies with the highest tax contribution (primarily active in energy, manufacturing, digital services, and logistics sectors) contributed more than €5 billion to the Italian public budget in 2023 through direct taxes and social security charges, with an average tax payment per company of approximately €100 million (up from €62 million in 2022).
15 years alongside our customers
It's been 15 years since we first opened our virtual storefronts in Italy, marking a radical transformation in consumer experiences and helping make shopping increasingly accessible, personalized, and digital.
To celebrate this milestone, we presented an analysis conducted in collaboration with Professor Patrizia Martello, NABA University of Milan and IUAV of Venice, and AstraRicerche, chronicling 15 years of evolution in Italian consumer trends through purchasing behaviors from 2010 to 2025. The analysis shows how e-commerce has promoted not only convenience and breadth of offering but also a new relationship between people, brands, and communities, where values like trust, sustainability, and local identity play an increasingly central role.
Since 2010, we’ve contributed to making shopping experiences more accessible, intuitive, and relevant for Italian customers — in a context that continues to evolve thanks to digital technologies and new consumption models. Over the past 15 years, e-commerce has become smarter, more predictive, and more tailored: this evolution has gone hand in hand with the development of services such as Amazon Music, Prime Video, Alexa, and Audible.it, and with the expansion of a product selection designed to meet the needs of millions of Italian households.
