Amazon’s local Italian-based workforce grew more than 50% in 2018, from 3,500 permanent employees at the end of 2017 to over 5,500 today.
In addition to creating jobs, Amazon has invested over €800 million in Italy in 2018 and over €1.6 billion since 2010.
Amazon’s jobs and investment support customers and also local Italian producers and entrepreneurs, who use services like Amazon’s Made in Italy store and Fulfillment by Amazon to grow their businesses and export Italian products around the world.
Milan – December 12, 2018 – Amazon today announced it has created over 2,000 permanent jobs in Italy this year: more than 50% increase from the end of 2017. The company exceeded the plan announced in July to create 1,700 new jobs this year. Amazon now has more than 5,500 permanent employees across Italy.
These include jobs for people from all backgrounds, education and skill levels – from engineers and software developers to entry-level positions. They’re located in many areas across the Country, from Milano to Passo Corese (RI), Vercelli, Castel San Giovanni and Cagliari. These jobs provide competitive pay and full benefits, including innovative programs like Career Choice and industry-leading parental leave programs. Amazon has invested over €1.6 billion Euros in its Italian operations since launch in 2010 and over €800 million Euros in 2018 alone.
Mariangela Marseglia, Country Manager Amazon.it and Amazon.es, said: “We’re proud to have welcomed more than 2,000 new Amazonians to our teams across the Country this year as we keep providing support to Italian customers and small businesses.” Marseglia added: “It’s still day one for Amazon in Italy – we’ll keep working hard to provide the best possible support for our customers and help local producers and entrepreneurs continue to succeed both within Italy and around the world.”
Alongside the new permanent roles the company is creating, Amazon continues to empower entrepreneurs and individuals who want to start a new business, digitalize an existing one or earn extra money to supplement their incomes through tools and services like Selling on Amazon and FBA. Italian third party businesses selling on Amazon have created more than 10,000 full time jobs in Italy to support their business through Amazon
Independent sellers on Amazon offer a variety of new, used, refurbished, and collectible merchandise. Artisans can sell their unique, handcrafted goods to hundreds of millions of customers worldwide, using the Handmade store. And the Made in Italy Store opens the doors of artisans’ workshops in Tuscany, Sardinia, Calabria, Campania, Piedmont, Sicily and in the territories of Bergamo and Vicenza, to customers around the world.
Amazon’s Infrastructure Investments Across Italy
Amazon continues to invest in fulfillment infrastructure across the country. After opening two new fulfillment centers in Passo Corese and Vercelli and five delivery stations across Italy in 2017, Amazon opened six new delivery stations and a new Sortation center in Casirate (Bergamo) this year.
Fred Pattje, Amazon Operations Director for Italy and Spain, said: “The creation of permanent jobs in our fulfillment centers and the opening of our new Sortation Center in Casirate (BG) with up to 400 jobs in the next three years demonstrate Amazon's commitment to Italy. This will enable us to further improve our support to Italian customers and to the growing number of independent small and medium businesses selling on Amazon and using Fulfillment by Amazon. These state-of-the art facilities offer local employees a great working environment, opportunities for professional development, competitive salaries and rewarding benefits.”
Amazon Web Services also announced last month it will open an infrastructure region in Italy in early 2020. For over 12 years, Amazon Web Services has been the world’s most comprehensive and broadly adopted cloud platform, supporting startups, small and medium businesses and enterprises in their digital transformation. This new AWS Infrastructure Region will enable Italian customers to run workloads and store data in Italy and serve end-users with even lower latency. The AWS Europe (Milan) Region will include three Availability Zones and will be AWS’s sixth region in Europe, joining the existing regions in France, Germany, Ireland, the UK, and Sweden in late 2018.
Competitive Pay, Comprehensive Benefits, and Training Programs for Italian Employees
All permanent Amazon employees, whether working in Italian fulfillment centers or corporate offices, receive competitive pay and a comprehensive benefits package, including private medical insurance from day one, life assurance, an employee discount on Amazon.it and a company pension plan. Amazon also offers fulfillment center associates an innovative program called Career Choice which provides funding for adult education, offering to pre-pay 95% of tuition and associated fees for nationally recognized, in-demand courses, up to 8,000 euro over four years.
Amazon was selected by Universum this year as one of the “Most Attractive Employers in Italy”. Over 38,000 students in 44 different Italian universities ranked Amazon 4th among all Italian companies for business students, up 6 places from last year, and 7th for engineering students.
